Top places to visit with a rental car

Costa del Sol

Malaga is one of the cities comprising the Mediterranean coastline known as Costa del Sol.  Literally "Coast of the Sun", these pristene beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world.

The area has become a popular destination for foreign tourists not only for its beaches but also for its local culture.  The coast offers many resorts along a long stretch of beach between Gibraltar and Nerja.

Museo Picasso Malaga

Many plan their journey to Malaga just to visit the birth place of Pablo Ruiz Picasso.  One of the world's many Picasso Museums, the Museo Picasso Malaga opened in 2003 in the Buenavista Palace and houses 155 of his works.  These works were mostly donated by members of Picasso's family.  The museum is only 200 meters from the Plaza de la Merced where Picasso was born.

In addition to preserving and displaying the work of Picasso the museum has committed itself to relaunch the city's cultural life.  The restoration and conversion of the Buenavista Palace was a large step in these efforts.  The building was originally the estate for Diego de Cazalla during the 16th century, and was placed over the remains of a Nasrid palace, preserving some of the old palace's elements.

Parking can be tricky around Calle San Agustín, where the Picasso Museum and birth place are located, so plan extra time but save money with a cheap car rental Malaga, Spain.

Santuario de la Virgen de la Victoria

Alcazaba

In addition to the many popular ornate churches in Malaga you can also visit toe Moorish fortification, the Alcazaba.  Erected in the 8th and completed around the 11th century for King Badis, the Zurid ruler of Granada, this fortification served as the palace of the governors of the city.

Alcazaba

You can also visit the ruins of a Roman theater dating to the 2nd century which sit next to the entrance to the Alcazaba, which 'borrowed' some of the theater's materials.

Head into the center of the city in your car hire Malaga, Spain, and up onto the hill overlooking the port.  The entrance is through a gateway called "Puerta de la Bóveda" (Vault Gate), by a design which doubles back on itself intended to make progress difficult for attacking forces.  The pathway winds through landscaped gardens containing several ornate fountains.
